The Multi-Project Trap. (And How to Escape It)
Focus is a weapon—use it wisely, one sprint at a time...
Productivity advice for the week:
Sprint vs. Marathon
If you’re a reader of this newsletter, you probably enjoy being productive, getting things done, and pushing yourself.
I am probably safe to assume you have multiple projects going at once.
Making small increments of progress on multiple different things can be less efficient than specific, larger progress on onething.
Think of it like the Tour de France.
The overall race is made up of smaller sprints/stages.
This is how you should treat your creative/side quests.
They are all constantly in the fray, but at certain times you may schedule specific times to make additional progress on one.
That doesn’t mean the projects that are receiving less attention are less important, but simply at this specific point in your life, it makes sense to work on that.
Don’t fear not being productive on everything all the time. Allow things to take centre stage.
For example, I recently set up a podcast
For about a month it was the main thing I was working on.
My acting, guitar, and writing work all took a huge backstep, as I wanted/needed to make further progress on them at that time.
Right now the podcast has returned with the others, and sorting out my living situation for next year is at the forefront.
Allow different things to take precedence at different times.
Sprint within the marathon.
Organisation advice for the week:
Have Fun
Remember to schedule in fun.
Life is for living.
Word of the week:
Amenable = Open and responsive to suggestion, easily persuaded or controlled; compliant
Quote of the week:
When you tell stories, you do yourself a kind favour by taking a moment to write your name in the wet cement of life before you head to whatever is next. -Matthew Dicks, Author
